I was recently told that I should start a blog, but what would I write about I asked myself. As I pondered the idea, it came to me that my life is one big intermingled little stories (some good, some I'm still trying to sort out, and some, well, sad) and that there's a lot I could write about starting with my first memories and ending at the point of this week... So here goes...

My history is not that much different than others...and those that know me know I'm VERY proud of my Hispanic heritage. My grandmother would always tell us cousins stories (my dad had 15 bothers and sisters!) about how there was a sailor on Columbus' ship named Rodrigo de Triana. I've always wondered if there is direct lineage. If you are so inclined you can read more about Rodrigo...

Rodrigo was the one who yelled, Tiera, Tiera! meaning land, land...Of course we all know Christopher Columbia received credit for this discovery, but many thought Rodrigo should have...Anyway, the point of this story is that things do not always appear as they are and I try (as hard as it may be sometimes) to learn from things that happen - there's a lesson in everything. My dad always said that things happen for a reason and my mom always said you make the best of what happens. To this day, I'm not sure who is right on that one, but when something does happen, I try to apply each of those phrases and go with it. That usually helps me come to a place of acceptance...

The story of Rodrigo always taught me about the ability to take the backseat and not clamor for attention. It always works out that one person really is given credit, but how many other men and women laid the stones up to the point of discovery. My point is that I guess I'd rather be the one "laying the stones", it seems more fulfilling and a greater sense of accomplishment.
