I had a friend who was having trouble changing. She recognized the need for change, she recognized certain behaviors that needed modifying, and she set out a plan to change her behavior for the better. However, she kept having bad days, and those bad days were discouraging her. Then an Aerosmith song lyric came into my head which read, "Life's a journey, not a destination," and I think this is something she should keep in mind.
You see, some of the most exciting times in life stem from when you recognize that you need to change. At that point of recognition you begin your journey, and it is important, most important, to understand that on this journey to your destination there will be setbacks, there will be 'bad days'. If you understand this to begin with and expect bad days, then when you have them they won't bring you down that heavily.
And not only do I think you should expect setbacks, but embrace them. If you are trying to regain happiness that has long been lost, understand that on your journey to happiness there will be many happy days, inspirational days, but there also will be down days. On those down days, let yourself feel down. Don't let yourself feel guilty for being down, it's okay. If you feel like crying at the drop of a hat, cry, don't fight it.
The other lyric that goes along with Aerosmith song verse I quoted earlier is the most important to understand. It read... 'You have to learn to crawl, before you learn to walk," and I was quick to remind my friend of these words.
