How much fun it is to pretend. We did a lot of that as kids. Pretend to be a cowboy as we hid in the bush- with our friends
looking for us. My friend Walter took his wife to Hollywood
just to see what it was like. Visiting a movie set- Gosh, he even
had a coffee with Phyllis Diller. But he was not asked to play
a part so returned with simply memories and pictures and can
tell his friends, yes- he has been to Hollywood. In other words
he liked the glitter but didn't get the gold.
I remember a movie with the late John Denver and George
Burns. I think Burns played God.
I also remember visiting Nagoya, Japan in l998 and using my
best possible acting role trying to ask directions, in what I
thought was credible Japanese. Well, that didn't work out well.
Do we not all act out much of our life, putting on a Bogart
face, or using the famous Clint Eastwood expression - " Ok
Punk, make my day..." Yes, indeed, even with company coming
we greet friends and neighbors at the door with our pasted on
smile and Elvis imitation: Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou very
much. Why is that? What is so ingrained in our very being that
we need to act like someone else. But act we do, whether going
to court, preparing for a job interview or even going out on that
first date.Man - what great actors we can be. Impress your
teacher, Impress your friends, tell a joke, act like Tom Cruise,
be nutty like Tom Hanks in his wonderful performance where he
makes that magnificent statement:"Life is like a box of chocolates and sometimes we just don't know which one we are
going to get..." and so it goes.
Hey baby (as you imagine the stranger at your door) - You're
going to Hollywood....
