Mom always reminded us kids to drink our water. I recall Dad
going to the well and putting in a bucket and letting it down a
long ways and bringing it back up. Cold, clear, wonderful water.
And this was the first 10 to 12 years of my life. Well water.
And, eventually the municipal system was created and everyone
had water and sewer. It made its way from a nearby river into
our homes. Convenient. We enjoyed it.
And here it is 2010 and it seems everybody but everybody is
drinking bottled water. Walk into Walmart and walk out with
a nice 24 pack. Place a water cooler in your home. Carry a
bottled water when you take a summer trip on your bicycle
or motorcycle. And as Mom said, Drink your water.
And we spend plenty on that commodity known as bottled water.
Sometimes we buy the image of this heavenly substance coming
from atop one of the snow covered Rocky Mountains. Yet
The Natural Resources Defense Council seems to have made
the determination that as much as 40% of all bottled water
comes from a city water system. So why not just take the water
out of our tap? Maybe we are convinced the bottled stuff is
better? Yet, once in a while the bottled stuff is recalled,
due to contamination. Some have been found to contain
bromate, arsenic, even mold and bacteria. Is that comforting?
I think not. Yet, even knowing that - we go back and buy
more bottled water. Its convenient. I carry a couple of bottles
and have done so for a long time. But am now having second
thoughts. In the U.S. as much as 70% of bottled water sold
is exempt from bottled water standards. There is a variance
from state to state and across the border in Canada there is
a lot of bottled water sold daily.
And still we drink bottled water, pay exhorbitant prices
and are reluctant to change our habits. But we now need to
look at the various ramifications of consuming water from
plastic bottles, that in itself possibly posing some risk. We
need to pay attention to not only water but food products we
are putting into our bodies. We need to understand the
difference between sparkling and carbonated. We can only
be richer, wiser and healthier, if we take the time and gain
more knowledge and information about bottled water.
Because as Mom said, we need to drink our water. We need
to know for certain its safe.
