SUICIDE - BUT WHY?

We have heard the stories. A man in a city, somewhere in
this mighty universe- is depressed. Perhaps he lost big time
in the stock market, for health reasons or marital reasons
or a host of other reasons we shall never know - decides to
use a gun or a rope- he makes the news. Suicide.
A farmer has lost a crop. His wife left him earlier for a wealthy
neighbor. He goes out to the barn. Suicide.
Suicide? Why? A trucking associate of mine and his girl friend
recently lost a teenage daughter. They are devastated. And
again, the reasons are many.
Just maybe, the least we can do for those who have lost someone
dear is to cast a light on the good years, the good times.
Suicide is dangerous. It leaves a black hole in the hearts of
surviving family members. And it is not a solution. The hurt is
felt - and stays with those who survive. Time is a healer and
so is the power of prayer. If only we had done something
different. If only this. If only that. But the deed is done and
what is left has to be accepted.
So family members move forward. And leave the cause and
effect to God. And to those who have taken their own lives,
we pray and only wish it did not have to be this way.
