ACTING LIKE A BIG KID

I recall our neighbor Butch used to walk across the road whenever he saw our
firepit aglow. Butch suffered from Diabetes and eventually it cost him firstly his
legs and then his life. But I was always amazed how Butch came over and chased
our dog around and around the firepit. Such a childish thing for a grown man.
But such a splendid thing....
This got me thinking about some of the childish things I did at one time or another so many years ago. Such as digging down at least ten or twelve feet
into the ground and I guess Dad caught the beam of the flashlight from way down below and asked in astonishment what I might be doing. My reply was
something about working my way to China. We had a good chuckle and filled
the hole I was digging. Dad said it was not safe.
Another time at the grand age of ten or twelve I hoped onto a moving train which
carried me at least 10 or 15 miles out of the city and when it slowed down I just
luckily managed to jump off safely and work my way home. I realized it was not
a wise idea to do such a silly thing. But when I look back in some ways I am glad
that is something I wanted to do and completed the task and oddly enough never
brought it up with any family members. Not something I would recommend....
And perhaps when we stop taking on new things, trying on new ideas for size
or just give up on even trying...that is a sign that life is not providing us with all
the joy it might. Sure, you must draw the line somewhere. Never going where
Angels fear to tread, being one of my favorite sayings...yet to sometimes live a
little dangerously is not all bad. As long as it does not hurt anyone or cause any
injuries - then just maybe its a new challenge. Something a young person might say - we gotta do what we gotta do...and sometimes minor scrapes go with the territory...
Young folks nowadays often go to the extreme and I find that a little hard to take.
But then again, maybe its just that kind of trend that has to run its course.
And maybe thats the thing about life itself, having to run its course, with some
folks willing to dare a little more and others settling into a comfort zone that does need the sparkle of danger. Perhaps its just a personal thing. Should you do or should you dare?
If it were not for some of our brave men and women in this world, we may not have gotten the first airplane off the ground or climbed some of the high mountains, Its about the fact that there is just so much out there, so little time
to do it all and the temptation to try is just sometimes too great to resist.
So if you need to listen to that inner voice that is telling you to go ahead and
give it a go....perhaps with some proper preparation you should very well do so.
Because after all, we are really big kids (at heart).
