I think my first blog for inspiration should be about the man who inspired me to be the best person I could be, to always believe that the smallest thing can change the world - for better or for worse, and that each small thing that we do should leave happiness. This man is my Grandad.
My Grandad, John McDonald Donald, always thought of others before himself. One of my most favourite memories of him was aged 9. We had gone to visit my Grandad in 1993 - he had fallen through a glass door the previous day and had several cuts which had affected his movement because of his age (he was 82). Now, being 9 years old and loving my Grandad, I ran into the house to greet him like I normally do - jumping on his lap. Now, I was only 9 and so excited and didn't quite understand the complexities of age and the restrictions of ill-health so thought I could act like I always do. My Dad knew differently and grabbed me before I had chance to jump onto my Grandad's lap. My Dad slowly explained that Grandad could not love me in the same way because he wasn't well, that he was 'too hurt' to have me on his lap, but that I could still give him a kiss.
I looked towards my Grandad, looking I think for confirmation that he wasn't well. My Grandad slowly rose to his feet - he walked the few feet that stood between me and him, scooped me in his arms and walked back with me to his chair for me to sleep on his lap. Once seated, and I was comfortably in my normal hugging position, he turned to my Dad and said 'I am never too hurt for my Granddaughter'.
My Grandad was in extreme pain, in agony and had thought of his Granddaughter first.
This act showed me to always put others first - the way he stood and walked in pain to make me happy will always be memorable. He taught me that love, or making other people happy is the key to life. We gain happiness in giving, rather than receiving.
He truly inspired me to be the person I am today... to see the best in others, to be the best you can be, and never do anyone any harm.
