blog
I will begin this journey by explaining the origins of Bona Dea and why
I chose this name to describe myself. It personifies the "good goddess"
of Roman and Greek mythology who was the patron of the good of the
earth and the chastity and fertility in women. More specifically, she
was the protector of women throughout their lives and honored them with
power, unity and abundance. Yet the paradox she embodied was that of
virginity and fertility, and men were not allowed to know her name or
be in her presence. Despite these contradictions, Bona Dea was called
upon for healing and for freedom from slavery. She was particularly
honored by the lower social classes, such as slave and plebian women.
And
herein lies the reason for my choice in Bona Dea. I am a stong woman,
committed to ending modern day slavery and violence against women. I am
empassioned to fight the ills of the world and dedicate my life to the
pursuit and respect of human rights and liberties for all. I seek to
heal others with my love, compassion and empathy for their
circumstances, and strive to embody an individual who respects the
undiscovered dreams of future generations. And yet, I do not exemplify
Bona Dea's characteristic of women-only membership. I support all
genders, animals, and non-human organisms.
All this I hold true
to my being. I am the "good goddess", an abolitionist, a womanist, and
an activist. I am many things with many contradictions, but one thing I
am not is inauthentic. Thus, this blog will be a reflection of all that
Bona Dea is and more...all that I am and stand for. I invite you to
come along with me on this journey!
