To turn on television and watch a Comedian telling jokes about India...especially when that comedian is from India, noticing more neighbors are from China, or Vietnam- The fabric of Canada is changing.
And not only Canada, but places like England. Germany. Even our southern neighbors, the U.S.A. New faces, new mosques, new grocery stores that cater to the new immigrant. The new Canadian. The new American. A different style of dressing.
And perhaps this change does give us an opportunity to learn more about the others on Earth we never thought we would see or speak with in our lifetime. But alas, they are here. This is now their home. And with the surge of new faces from places like Africa, Somalia, Mexico - of course there are going to be a few incidents of misunderstanding. New music. new customs. new friends.
How should we welcome these newcomers. Do we show them about, invite them into our homes, offer them employment. Well, certainly and hopefully these newcomers in turn will show us a new citizen with a few new ideas. Again, an opportunity, to share and to grow together. We need to be positive in these circumstances and realize it would be as tough for them in a new country as it might be for us to realize they are part of the new fabric, the new era of change and everyone deserves to be happy and given a hug and a smile. That will always do more than all the misunderstanding in the world. So go and knock on the door of your ndighbor. Ask them what that aroma is...perhaps curry cooking....or something you could get the recipe for.
Tell your new friend about a community event. Share photos.
And don't forget the hug and the smile.
