The great thing about black and white television in the early years were shows that brought tears to your eyes, like Lassie,
I Love Lucy, The Lone Ranger, Howdie-Doodie, later shows
like Route 66,  Bonanza, Dallas....and the progession to colour
television...

But fast forward to present times and shows like The Sopranos
start to take us into a different realm. The action is fast and mean, the language equally rough and not much left to the
imagination.

That was the good thing about the old days television. There
were good guys and bad guys. The Lone Ranger did the job,
Lassie went to the rescue.  We cheered for Litle Joe in
Bonanza and laughed when Desi Arnez gave Lucy advice
in I Love Lucy.

So that is the question today: Where do we go from here?
Are we becoming a mean spirited and speak-as-you-please
society, forgetting all about decency and dignity? Are we
getting influenced by JR and Tony Soprano?  If so, then
we are all in trouble. And as Dad said, you cannot turn the
clock back.

Perhaps we all need to have a refresher course on old ways
and old days.  A polite Hello as opposed to let me tell you
where to go.  After all, as a dear friend of mine said -
The Dictionary is filled with fine words.  We just need to
use them...

So its up to us. We can take the time to write to our
broadcasters and tell them what we think - or we can let
them decide what we should say and think...and move
further and deeper into a world that has already let things
go too far, too fast...with things that should be precious
and good - taking a back seat- to this new found freedom.
We do have a choice. We really do...
