We learn something new everyday!! Talking to a friend of mine
(George) the other day, I inquired if he still worked in a company known to have a few dysfunctional people, mostly with
drug issues...
George remarked: "But John, we are all dysfunctional if you
look at the big picture?!!"
That got me thinking. Wikipedia (the free encylopedia) has lots
to say about dysfunctional people, mostly that some are abnormal, some are extremely intelligent and are just as
abnormal as their opposites. Wikipedia goes on to tell us:
The U.S. has about 1/4 of the population that are believed to meet the criteria for a mental disorder in any given year, in
other words abnormal, dysfunctional.
Now maybe friend George is onto something. After all, we know
soldiers may return with some issues, many family issues have
dysfunctional issues. Gosh, movie stars have even bragged about
growing up in dysfunctional surroundings. Alcohol, drug abuse,
sexual abuse. Many forms of abnormal behavior.
In some cases, police and fireman may be under stress and show
some signs of abnormal behavior. Often the matter is temporary.
Perhaps the secret is to recognize and try to understand unusual
behavior. After all, we all have the power to change, even if we
might (as friend George tells me) be dysfunctional for a time.
Teenage rebellion, losing a loved one, circumstances involving
health - and people may appear different than the person we
thought we knew. But given some time and patience, perhaps
we can all begin to understand dysfunctional behavior....
