They are the group that leave the biggest imprint on your day.

I had just started a new job, and due to lack of parking spaces, I made use of the local  Park & Ride.  As I got on the bus, I took one look at the drivers face, and  I could see that he was having a miserable morning, and it was only 8.15 am.  So, looking him in the eye as I climbed aboard, I smiled, and gave a cheery "Morning".  Hearing a mumbled reply, I hoped that he got more than one greeting during his working day, and resolved at the same time, that I would make the effort to smile more, especially at work.

Working in retail, can be rewarding, but also leave you with a feeling of being taken for granted.  Whilst a large proportion of the general public are courteous and friendly, there is a small group of people, that can be down right rude, and unfortunately, they are the group that leave the biggest imprint on your day.  This must be the same for all people that provide a service for the public.  So with this thought in mind, I realised that I was in an ideal position to lead by example.

Now, weeks later, my bus driver not only has a smile ready as we board and disembark his bus, he also includes a hello to those that speak to him.

It is so easy to see a figure providing the service that you require, without noticing the person.  A polite gesture, no matter how small, can help erase any ill feeling, left by that previous customer.  If every one said an hello, thank you or gave an occasional smile, I think we would all feel a bit better, and maybe our rountines would be a little less predictable.  No matter what job you do, give a thought to the people that you see every day, and give it a go.  See what happens.  You might be suprised.
