Has anyone noticed that acronyms are now a big part of our life? I walked into work and found a letter waiting for me from my manager, with a list of "apparent" tasks to complete during the day. I say apparent, because as I read through it, I began to think that maybe it was a secret code, for my eyes only. First job of the day was to make sure that the S.O's were put out first thing, as well as the W.D.P. The D.M was all in the S.R as well as the F.S.U. It was especially important that I made sure all of this was done, within the first hour of opening, as the A.M was due in with the A.D.M. Could I also make sure that the O.O.O.S.I's, were chased up and that the C.R. was nice and tidy. One other thing, the E.D.N's had not been posted, and the N.V.Q report had come in for my attention, regarding the R.A.G report!
Out of all that I knew what the N.V.Q, and E.D.N (electronic delivery note) were, but all of the rest was a puzzle. I finally worked it out that the Special Offers were due out that day and in the stockroom I would find all of the display material along with the window display poster. The F.S.U remained a puzzle until the Area Manager visited along with the Area District Manager, and they kindly informed me that it stood for Free Standing Unit. Of course it does! My favourite, O.O.O.S.I. stood for outstanding out of stock items, which, by the time I had worked it out, I realised that I had already done it. Panic set it over the R.A.G, but a telephone call sorted that out and I now know that it stands for Red, Amber, Green report. Phew!
Unfortunately, due to the amount of work left for me to do as well as the time wasted trying to unravel all of the codes, the Consultation Room did not get tidied up, but hey, at least I now know what it all stands for.
Are we getting lazy? Or will the dictionary by replaced with an English Acronyms yearly addition? All I ask, is that more thought is put into these supposedly easy to follow abreviations. Lets just say that through out that particular day, I thought up a few of my own, but none of them printable. T.T.F.N.
