We are told black bears killed equal three times the amount of the previous year. The bears were attracted to various camps in the Ft. McMurray area because of the smell of food and garbage mostly. The question: Why shoot them? Could they not be moved further back in the bush? Are folks in the camps neglecting to control the garbage? Conservation groups are outraged. And consider that the real culprit here are those disposing of garbage, in some cases improper storage and disposal. Has anyone heard of an electric fence, some sort of siren to scare off the bears. Do we really need to shoot them? There needs to be an improved wildlife management plan and this should include rapping the knuckles of those who stay in camps and have a lackadaisical atitude. And those who call themselves conservation officers could well do to look at better and different methods. I have picked berries and camped in heavy populated black bear areas of B.C. Never had a problem. Simple: Dispose of food and garbage with great care. Put a fence around garbage dumps. Shooting all these bears is totally unnecessary. We don't need reckless resource management - in the name of progress!! There has got to be a better way!!! Sorry, if I sound angry...I am...
