Ok, let me honest and open with you. Yes, I admit it. I had a crush on Joan Baez. But then, so did Bob Dylan and even Steve Jobs of Apple Computers...Joan has long been an incredible songwriter-singer of songs that last . My favorite of all her material happens to be the song Diamonds and Rust, from her 1975 album which is still rated as her very best. Not only a singer, songwriter, but an activist -concerned with human rights, with the environment and with peace.
I suppose what made Joan so very special was not only her splendid voice but the types of songs she recorded and even some of the special people associated with her. And there were many. Joan performed for over 53 years and had over 30 successful albums. Singing not only folk but rock, and even gospel.
Joan has been a tireless worker for Amnesty International and often spoke out about politics and as late as 2011 Joan Baez was involved in a play about Occupy Wall Street. But most of all it has been the sweet voice we have heard in songs like Farewell Angelina, With God on Our Side and others that brought attention to injustice and various social concerns. You are always beautiful and wonderful Joan, and yes, I still think that crush I had on you......is still there......
